Sylvia Hemmingway

Sylvia studied Fine Art at the National College of Art & Design, Dublin, and works mainly in printmaking, painting and drawing. She has a Masters in Fine Art and a B.A.( Hons.) in Fine Art Printmaking. She has won many awards for her work including an Arts Council Travel & Training Award in 2013, in 2009 a Wexford Co. Co. Artists Bursary Award and in 2008 a Golden Fleece Merit Award.

Her work is concerned with issues of identity and the element of chance in the make-up of the individual  – and the persistence of the past in the present in relation to this. There is a branch of science that contends that genes have a ‘memory’ and that our DNA can be affected / altered by what our grandparents experienced – the air they breathed, the food they ate, even the things they saw. Sylvia’s  work explores this hidden capacity of ‘something’ to have an effect on the character and development of the genes. She considers the effects the decisions of someone else, or events in their lives, however small, have on one’s own life and make-up.

Sylvia is co-founder of Blackstack Studio. Her works are held in collections in Ireland and abroad, including the collections of the O.P.W, Wexford County Council, NCAD, (Dublin), Wexford VEC and the State University of New York.
